The image is difficult to classify. From a formal point of view we cannot pinpoint its belonging to Romanesque, the time when according to tradition the image was hidden. There appears to be evidence of its belonging to the Gothic-Renaissance period which would correspond to the epoch when it appeared. The sculpture stills conserves on one of its cheeks the trace of a blow, perhaps the one Juan Pedernal struck it with his pickaxe.
